Replacing Injured Jos Buttler
Yorkshire recently lost Dawid Malan’s services after he was called up to replace the injured Jos Buttler in England’s ODI squad for the series against Sri Lanka. Yorkshire will be without Joe Root, Adil Rashid, Jonny Bairstow, and David Willey in addition to Malan, resulting in a loss of experience. Injuries have forced Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Will Fraine to sit out. In the North Group, Yorkshire is currently second only to Nottinghamshire in terms of net run rate.
“With the number of players we are now missing due to England commitments and injury, we felt we needed to add top-order batsmen to our squad for the latter stages of the group,” coach Andrew Gale said.
“We have made a great start to this year’s Vitality Blast and seen some great contributions from some of our younger players, but feel like the addition of an experienced batsman at the top of the order is important to help keep up the momentum.
“Mark Stoneman certainly fits the bill for what we were looking for; an experienced player who will fit in at the top of the order. His quality is well known and we are looking forward to welcoming him into the squad.”
Stoneman T20 Career
After being sidelined at Surrey, Stoneman will be eager to rekindle his T20 career with this opportunity. He hasn’t participated in a single game this season, and he only appeared once last year, in a game in which he didn’t get to bat. In T20 cricket, he has averaged just 20.38 runs per innings with a strike rate of 118.
