West Indies recall Russell for SA T20Is

As the West Indies prepare to welcome back spectators, Andre Russell returns to the T20I set-up. Cricket West Indies (CWI) has named a 13-man squad for the first two Twenty20 Internationals against South Africa in Grenada.

World Cup-winning T20 Squads

Russell, who was a frequent member of the World Cup-winning T20 squads in 2012 and2016, has played 49 T20Is. After a brief hiatus in March of last year, he has returned to the fold.

FULL SQUAD:

  • Kieron Pollard (c),
  • Nicholas Pooran (vc),
  • Fabian Allen,
  • Dwayne Bravo,
  • Fidel Edwards,
  • Andre Fletcher,
  • Chris Gayle,
  • Jason Holder,
  • Evin Lewis,
  • Obed McCoy,
  • Andre Russell,
  • Lendl Simmons,
  • Kevin Sinclair

“Andre Russell will add that ‘X’ factor to the team,” Roger Harper, the chief selector said. “He is an impact player with both bat and ball and lends greater depth in both departments. The aim is to build on the performance against Sri Lanka earlier this year, to build confidence while determining our best squad and team as we run into the T20 WC.”

Russell had only recently made his debut for Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League. In his first appearance, though, he sustained a concussion. His involvement in the PSL was cut short as he had to be stretchered off for treatment.

Talismanic all-rounder

The talismanic all-rounder was included to the 13-man team for the opening two T20Is against South Africa by the Cricket West Indies selection panel. Russell last played for the West Indies in a T20I series against Sri Lanka in March 2020
