Sydney Sixers re-sign Carlos Brathwaite for BBL 2021-22

The Sydney Sixers have signed West Indies allrounder Carlos Brathwaite for another season, the organization announced. Brathwaite was a key component of the Sixers’ title-winning season last season, taking 16 wickets in 16 games.

This 2021-22 campaign will be Brathwaite’s third with the Sixers having also played four games in the seventh edition of the tournament.  “Obviously winning and the team’s success last year made it attractive to want to come back,” Brathwaite said. “As you get older you definitely want to be somewhere you can hopefully be challenging for trophies but at the Sixers, there is a deeper camaraderie and sense of family atmosphere.”

Turn up for Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League

Brathwaite, who just concluded playing in The Hundred’s inaugural season, will now play in the Caribbean Premier League with the Jamaica Tallawahs before returning to Sydney at the end of the year. The 33-year-old will be hoping for better results with the bat this season after scoring only 55 runs in the last competition. He singled out the Sixers’ fans, whom he believes portrayed the role of the 12th man to perfection in last year’s final.

“As a team, we went through a tumultuous season last year on the road without getting back to Sydney until the final and we built a very strong bond,” he said. “The BBL is one of the biggest T20 tournaments in the world and hopefully that bond can help us to succeed again, this time in front of our fans at the SCG all season.

“That BBL final at the SCG last season was so special. We played away from home all year and performed well enough to earn a home final. It was the only game all year with our own fans, played at our home, not someone else’s home ground or a neutral venue.”

Defend the title once again

The Sixers will hope that keeping Brathwaite puts them in a great position to defend their title and become the first team to win it three times in a row. Nine players from last season’s final XI will return to the Sixers this season, including Nathan Lyon and Tom Curran, who did not play in the 2020-21 season.
