South Africa Need A Spin Intervention Against Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka used spin to defeat South Africa in the first ODI, which came as no surprise. The poise and determination displayed by their team when a 301-point target was threatened will have been heartening to the home crowd.

South Africa was in the hunt for 90% of the chase, but despite some costly overs, captain Dasun Shanaka put his faith in his more experienced spinners, who, along with Dushmantha Chameera, ensured that they received 10 crucial ODI Super League points. Sri Lanka appeared hopeless against England and even a second-string India not long ago.

South Africa will believe they were close to winning, but they will also know that they bowled too much seam on that surface. Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, and Anrich Nortje all went for well over a run-a-ball. Aiden Markram, the part-time offspinner, can he get more overs?

The bigger concern is that they will be without captain Temba Bavuma for the remainder of the series after he suffered a thumb fracture. Keshav Maharaj, who has only played 12 ODIs, will take his place at the helm. This is a relatively inexperienced team overall, with Qunton de Kock and David Miller absent from the tour. To come back from a 1-0 deficit, they’ll have to band together.
