Shakib seeks ‘better wickets’ for New Zealand T20Is

In the upcoming five-match T20 series against New Zealand, Shakib Al Hasan believes that playing on “excellent wickets” will help Bangladesh prepare for the T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh is riding high after their historic series victory over Australia, but the playing surfaces took center stage as the two teams battled it out in a series of low-scoring contests. Many in Bangladesh’s cricketing circles have questioned the prudence of playing on such tailor-made wickets, especially because the T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman will likely be more temperate and batting-friendly, putting Mahmudullah and his teammates at risk of being caught out.

Prepare Similar wickets for New Zealand

Bangladesh, on the other hand, is likely to prepare similar wickets for New Zealand, with victories considered crucial in the build-up to a major event. Shakib, on the other hand, believes that they would have fared better if they had played on sporting wickets.  “Wherever T20s are played, it is usually played on a good wicket.

Maybe it would benefit us more (preparation-wise for ICCWT20) if we could play in a better wicket against New Zealand,” Shakib said. “It is up to the team management to decide on what type of wicket they want to play before going there. Whatever it is, we have to adapt. Since the game is in our country, there is no chance to make excuses,” he said.

Shakib, who is happy to bat wherever the team needs him, adding that his batting form is not bothering him and underlined that the Australia series was not a genuine reflection on the batsmen.

“Naturally I will try to go into the T20 World Cup in good shape and that had always been the case but I don’t think there are too many problems in batting,” he said.

“I feel playing one or two big innings will bring me back into my groove. There was no scope to score big against Australia due to the nature of the wicket and so it would not be wise to count those five matches. There were opportunities in Zimbabwe that I could not take. If there is a ‘better wicket’ in the New Zealand series then I will try to play big innings,” he said

The Remainder of IPL 2021

Shakib also has the remainder of the IPL 2021 to get back into the batting flow before the World Cup. He recalls a similar situation in 2019 when he didn’t play many games for Sunrisers Hyderabad but utilized the opportunity to plan for the 50-over World Cup when he scored 606 runs and took 11 wickets.

“Yes, there will be that possibility (of preparing at the IPL) but now I have to see how many matches I can play and that is the challenge.

“If I play a match, there will be one kind of preparation and if you don’t play the match, there will be another kind of preparation. If you play regularly, it will be a kind of preparation and if I don’t play, then I have to take that preparation through training,” he concluded. Shakib, who is now in the United States, is anticipated to join his teammates before the start of the New Zealand series on September 1 and then fly to the UAE to compete in the IPL.
