Mushfiqur, Liton Return For New Zealand Series
The return of veterans Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das has boosted Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup preparations, as BCB confirmed a 19-member squad for the forthcoming five-match series against New Zealand at home. Aminul Islam, who is also returning from a personal absence, joins the duo.
Bangladesh’s chief selector Minhajul Abedin expressed relief at the return of Mushfiqur and Liton to the squad.” Naturally when you get back two of your best batsmen it is quite relieving and I am sure they will make the most of it considering it’s their last competitive cricket ahead of World Cup,” said Minhajul. “We have included Aminul as he gives us some variety and we are looking to see how he can fit in the playing XI.”
Forced to Withdraw
Mushfiqur was forced to withdraw from the just-finished home series against Australia after opting out of the last Zimbabwe series to be with his ailing parents and therefore missing Cricket Australia’s strict 10-day quarantine requirement limit. Liton, who had been forced out of the first two T20Is in Zimbabwe owing to a thigh injury, had returned home early from the trip to care for a sick family member and missed the Australia rubber, which the hosts won 4-1. Aminul Islam, a 22-year-old leg-spinner who lost his father while on national duty in Zimbabwe, had also pulled out of the Australia series.
Omitted from the 17-man squad
Mohammad Mithun, a top-order batsman, and backup keep were left out of the 17-man team that faced Australia. Mithun last played a T20I for Bangladesh during their tour of New Zealand earlier this year. “As far as Mithun is concerned, he needs to get some runs under his belt to get back his confidence,” Minhajul added. He also stated that the fast bowling combo of Kamrul Islam and Shohidul Islam has been selected as net bowlers and that they will be with the squad in the team hotel.
