Mumbai Cricket Association Appoints Gulam Parkar

Gulam Parkar has been appointed as a senior selector by the Mumbai Cricket Association. The association’s Cricket Improvement Group, which is responsible for selecting selectors and coaches, has included a former India opener in the five-member committee that will choose Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy and Under-23 teams. The chief selector, Salil Ankola, is still in charge.

Played one Test and Ten ODI in the 1980s

Parkar, who had been away from India for a long time and was completely unknown among Mumbai maidans, had only played one Test (against England) and ten One-Day Internationals in the 1980s. Understandably, the 65-year-old was ecstatic to be a part of the panel.

“My brother was a Mumbai selector last year. This year I am free, have no coaching assignments, not associated with any academy. Hence I applied for the job,” Parkar said.

“I am very happy that Gulam bhai is in the selection panel. I am looking forward to working with him,” the chief selector said.

“As the BCCI has already announced the domestic season schedule, we know how to plan. We have a long season ahead. We will have a camp and fitness will be our main criteria. (The Mumbai team) did well in the Vijay Hazare Trophy last year (they had won it). We hope to win the Ranji Trophy this year.”

Former India Players

Former India players Jatin Paranjpe, Vinod Kambli, and Nilesh Kulkarni were among the members of the CIC that interviewed candidates for the various selection committees. The CIC has already named Amol Muzumdar as the season’s coach.
