India’s new T20I skipper as selectors Set to Meet

The Indian team’s national selection committee is set to convene in the coming days to choose the squad for the forthcoming home series against New Zealand.

The meeting is crucial because the Chetan Sharma-led panel will be tasked with selecting a new Twenty20 captain, as Virat Kohli, the current all-format captain, has already stated that he will not lead the team in the shortest format following the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup.

Seniors Break

The current vice-captain Rohit Sharma is the frontrunner, but the seniors may be rested for the three Twenty20 International matches because they have been on the road since April – the IPL, then the WTC final, a Test series in England, the IPL again, and now the Twenty20 World Cup.

While Kohli has ceded solely the T20I captaincy, a split captaincy for the white-ball formats may be discussed. Chairman Chetan Sharma and member Abey Kuruvilla are among the selectors in Dubai. The remainder is located in India.

Rahul Dravid Applied Role

The players that are chosen for the trip will most likely be required to report by November 10 and will be subjected to a five-day quarantine before a few days of practice. In the meantime, the paperwork around India’s next head coach has yet to be fulfilled. Rahul Dravid, who has already applied for the role, is also expected to join them before then. The personnel of the support staff is still a mystery.

The deadline for the head coach position ended on October 26 but the deadline for the submission of applications for other coaches – batting, bowling, and fielding – is November 3. It is not clear if the interviews will be completed by November 10. It is learned that applications from some non-cricketers were received.

While the decisions appear to be a formality, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which would be responsible for interviewing the head coach, has yet to be created because one of its members, Madan Lal, has already served his term due to his age of 70. The BCCI will have to make a lot of judgments during the next week.

New Zealand kickstarts its tour with a T20I on November 17 in Jaipur followed by T20Is on November 19 (Ranchi) and November 21 (Kolkata). The two Tests are from November 25-29 (Kanpur) and December 3-7 (Mumbai).
