BCCI asks injured Gill to return; no replacement yet

Shubman Gill has been summoned to return home by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The youthful opener, who has been in the news recently due to a shin stress injury, has been ruled out of the five-Test series against England, which begins in August 4, and the BCCI wants him to return home. However, there is yet no word about a successor or when Gill will return.

No Immediate Replacement

There are no imminent plans to send a substitute for Gill, whose absence has the team’s management pondering a possible ‘what-if’ scenario. The unwelcome possibility of any of the available openers becoming ill-such as the seven England players-may result in a disaster.

KL Rahul has already been ruled out of contention for the opening slot in the Tests, leaving just Mayank Agarwal and the inexperienced Abhimanyu Easwaran to partner with seasoned Rohit Sharma. As a result, another opening choice might be better for the team.

“They have left it to the selectors to name a replacement, be it Prithvi Shaw or Devdutt Padikkal or whoever,”

Difficulties in Transporting Players Back To Sri Lanka

Both Shaw and Padikkal are currently with the white-ball side in Sri Lanka, and it is difficult to transport a player back to England from a country that, like India, is on the UK Government’s Red List. According to the government’s advice, persons from the Red List territories are not permitted to enter the United Kingdom unless they are British or Irish citizens. Others must undergo a 10-day quarantine upon arriving in the United Kingdom.

An Indian cricketer may isolate himself alone in a foreign country. Last year, Rohit Sharma did it in Australia, but it took a lot of planning.

Vaccination For The Players

The BCCI is coordinating vaccinations for the players, who received their initial vaccinations before departing for England last month. According to a BCCI source, the players, support staff, and their families would be given a second chance on July 7 and 9.
