Bairstow, Qais Ahmed give Welsh Fire winning start

In their first match at Headingley, Welsh Fire held off a spectacular attack from Harry Brook to claim a five-run victory over the Northern Superchargers.

Helping Superchargers To Recover

Brook struck five sixes and three fours in a 31-ball 62 to help the Superchargers recover from a bleak 50 for 4 after 41 balls, bringing them within five runs of the Fire’s 173-run total.

Brook was eventually bowled by Qais Ahmed, the most vital of the Afghan legspinner’s four wickets. Qais conceded just 13 runs from his 20 balls for his four strikes, making him one of just two bowlers (the other being Ben Stokes) to concede less than a run per delivery.

Enjoying Great Support

Jonny Bairstow made full advantage of a wicket that Jemimah Rodrigues had pounced on earlier in the day in the women’s tournament. Bairstow struck 56 off 36 balls, with Ben Duckett (41 off27) and James Neesham (30 off11) chipping in to help the Fire reach174, a total barely beyond Harry Brook’s reach.

Brief scores:

Welsh Fire173/4 in 100 balls (Jonny Bairstow 56, Ben Duckett 41; Matty Potts 1-23) beat Northern Superchargers 167/7 in 100 balls (Harry Brook 62; Qais Ahmed 4-13)by 5 runs.
